Spills / chemical damage
Red wine, pet urine, nail polish remover and household cleaners all have a window where they are recoverable and a window where they force a sand-back. Bona's TDS says 'spills should be removed promptly'; the next-day story is a maintenance programme plus a film chosen for chemical resistance.
Mechanism
Bona Traffic HD TDS states 'spills should be removed promptly. Unattended spills may cause cosmetic stains or damage the surface' and that 'no surface-applied finish system can prevent physical damage to the timber or the coating' under point loads, high heels, unwashed grit, etc. Chemical resistance is therefore a window, not an absolute. Waterborne 2-component polyurethane films (Traffic HD) are tighter-crosslinked than single-pack acrylics and resist solvents longer; oil-catalysed finishes like Craft Oil 2K sit in the timber and can be spot-treated.
Risk profile by species
| Species | Risk | Note & source |
|---|---|---|
| Oak And Light Species | visible-staining | Light-coloured timbers show tannin-reactive stain rings (red wine, coffee) more readily than dark species; cleaning window tighter.Source: ws-tdg-13-finishing-timber-externally.pdf p.43 (film-forming vs penetrating behaviour) |
| High Tannin Blackbutt | coating-interaction | Tannin bleed under water-based primers is a documented Bona caution (use Bona Intense).Source: species_primer_matrix.json |
Mitigations
-
Written maintenance schedule in the O&M manual: wipe spills immediately with a dry then slightly damp cloth; do not flood the floor; use Bona-recommended cleaners only.Source: Bona_TrafficHD_TDS_AU.pdf p.4
-
For kitchens, entries and commercial dining, specify Bona Traffic HD (2K waterborne polyurethane) for its crosslinked film — the published 1.5 mg / 100 revolutions SIS 923509 wear rate also indicates a tight film.Source: Bona_Traffic_HD_-_Technical_Data_Sheet.txt p.2

For residential with pets: Bona Traffic HD Raw brochure states it is 'great for homes with children and pets as well as commercial floor surfaces'.Source: backup__Bona_Traffic_HD_Raw_Broch_A4.txt

If a pet-urine stain has penetrated (dark black spot), spot-sand and re-stain is the remedy rather than topcoat alone; ATFA PCRM treats chronic urine as a moisture + alkali attack.Source: atfa-timber-flooring-problems-causes-remedial-measures-pcrm-2020-wayback.pdf
Bona product guidance
-
traffic-hd
2-component waterborne polyurethane; resistance to wear 1.5 mg / 100 revolutions (SIS 923509); spills should be removed promptly. Clean with Bona cleaner only.Source: Bona_TrafficHD_TDS_AU.pdf p.2, 4

traffic-hd-raw
Same wear resistance platform; intended for natural-look finishes. 'Great for homes with children and pets.'Source: backup__Bona_Traffic_HD_Raw_Broch_A4.txt p.1
-
craft-oil-2k
Penetrating oil; stains are more localised than in a film; can be maintenance-coated with additional Bona Craft Oil 2K or with an overcoating system using Bona Traffic HD over Craft Oil 2K.Source: Bona_Craft_Oil_2K_TDS.pdf p.5
Gaps in the corpus (no claim made)
- No numeric chemical-resistance matrix (e.g., EN ISO 2812-1 ratings per reagent) in the pulled Bona TDS excerpts. Only qualitative 'remove spills promptly' guidance.
- No published pet-urine pH threshold or 'recoverable time window' number in corpus.
