| Cleaning | Tools (brushes, trowels, etc) should be cleaned in Mineral Spirits (White Spirit) immediately after application Shelf life: 1 year from production date in unopened original container Storage/transport: The temperature must not fall below +5°C or exceed +25°C during storage and transport. Keep containers closed when not in use. Disposal: Wastes and emptied containers should be handled in accordance with local regulations. Pack size: 0.95 & 3.8 Lt Preparations Ensure the floor is acclimatized to its end-use environment, well sanded, dry and free from sanding dust, oil, wax and other contamination. Optimal application conditions are between 18 - 25C and 40 - 60% relative air humidity. High temperatures and / or low humidity will shorten the drying time whilst low temperatures and / or high humidity will lengthen the drying time. Minimum temperature for use is 13C Phone 1300 882 806 Australian datasheet only – June 2024 This datasheet replaces all previous versions The coarse sanding should be completed with grit P80 or 100 across the whole floor. Complete the sanding process using a rotary sander; multi-disc attachments are an efficient way to reduce the possibility of sanding marks. Ensure the edges and centre of the floor are sanded equally with no sanding marks being present. Finish sanding with grit P100 for hardwood timbers and P120 for softwoods. Sanding more finely will reduce penetration of the stain, reduce the colour intensity and adversely affect adhesion of the finish system. Very dense timber species, such as Ironbark, Grey Box and other similar species, may be difficult to stain using DriFast Stain as penetration into the timber is minimal, particularly in the heartwood sections. Similar issues can be seen with timbers containing high levels of tannin or natural oils which may affecting the drying of the stain. It is important not to ‘over sand’ and close off / ‘polish’ any such timbers. Where possible it is strongly recommended with such timbers that a trial is carried out to ensure that good penetration of DriFast Stain is obtained, and that the coating system has good adhesion to the stained surface. It is recommended that Bona Mix&Fill is used for any minor filling of holes, etc. If other fillers are used, they should broadly match the timber colour. The filling process should be completed before the final sanding operation. Clean the floor well before application of the stain. The sanding, properties of the timber and the application process control the appearance and final colour of a stained floor. These features can only be evaluated after the system has been completed. It is important to note that marks, colour differences, uneven colouring, etc. are not product faults or product related but are the responsibility of the contractor / specifier. It is strongly recommended that if uncertainty exists as to the condition of the floor or the potential final appearance that a trial area be prepared and evaluated prior to the floor being finished. Application Determine the required colour by trial applications prior to starting the floor. A final check may be made on the floor if required. N.B. Making additional applications of stain makes minimal difference to the final colour achieved so it is important that the correct colour is chosen prior to commencement of the contract. If a ‘darker more solid’ effect is required, it is possible to ‘water pop’ the floor. This process lifts the grain and brings a slightly rough but even surface which ‘holds’ more stain, thus giving a darker colour. After the final sanding is completed, and prior to the stain application, a lightly dampened mop or very fine mist spray should be used with clean water to dampen the wood. This process must be completed evenly across the floor. Missed areas or uneven application will be seen as a lighter area when the stain is applied. Similarly, if the grain is ‘crushed’ by materials being dragged across the surface, such as buckets / cans / boots / etc, then this also will be evident. N.B. Allow the floor to dry for 12 hours after water popping; it must be dry when stained. Stir the stain well before and during use – this is very important with White, or mixes containing it, due to its very high solids content. Any colour mixes must be made in sufficient quantity to complete the complete floor area. When completing larger areas requiriing the use of multiple cans it is prudent to mix all of the stain together before application so as to avoid any minor colour variation between cans. DriFast White, Grey and Birch are most suited for use on lighter ‘blonde’ floors to further enhance and emphasise the natural colours. Tannin and natural oils may result in colouration variation on timbers such as Oak or Pine species. It is important to understand that the effects of UV light on timber may result in subtle changes in colour. This may be more evident where DriFast White, Grey and Birch have been used. Do not use DriFast White or mixtures incorporating it on timbers with high levels of tannin / oil content, e.g. Blackbutt, Cypress Pine, etc; the drying times, curing process and adhesion of the stain, and subsequent finishes, may be affected. Phone 1300 882 806 Australian datasheet only – June 2024 This datasheet replaces all previous versions Machine application 1. Apply a thin even layer of DriFast Stain using an applicator pad or similar. Distribute to max. 3 m2 at a time. Apply stain at the room edges using an applicator or brush. Avoid applying excessive amounts of stain. Wipe excess stain off in the direction of the grain using a cotton cloth. 2. Wrap a Bona stain cloth around a red pad and place under a low speed buffing machine. Buff the floor within 3 - 5 minutes after application. The cloth will remove any excess. This can be taken to stain other areas of the floor, or can be discarded. The edges should be wiped thoroughly by hand. 3. Complete the remainder of the floor in the same manner. It is advisable to wear protective overshoes (‘booties’) whilst doing this. 4. It is also possible to apply DriFast Stain by adding the product into the centre hole of a buffing pad wrapped in a stain cloth and then buffing the floor. Additional stain can then be added either into the centre hole or as a small ‘puddle’ applied to an already stained area onto which the cloth / pad is placed. N.B. DriFast White should not be applied using this method Hand application 1. Apply a thin even layer of DriFast Stain in the direction of the grain using an applicator, cloth or brush. The use of a steel-edged trowel is possible but requires a degree of skill to ensure that an even coverage is achieved with no scratches from the trowel being made. N.B. This method generally produces a slightly ‘lighter’ colour than other methods due to a lower volume of stain being retained in the timber. 2. Allow a short time for penetration into the timber. 3. Wipe off excess material within 3 - 5 minutes using a soft cloth or similar Irrespective of the application method after application has been completed it is recommended that the floor be given a final buffing using a Bona Stain cloth to ensure that all residues are removed from the floor surface. Attention The stain must be completely dry before overcoating – see Drying Times. In poor conditions DriFast White / Ebony / Spice Brown / Cocoa may take significantly longer to dry; it is recommended that heating and ventilation are used where appropriate. If DriFast Stain is not dry when overcoated the applied finishes may not dry, cure or adhere properly to the stained surface. Similarly, failure to remove all stain residues will result in an uneven appearance and poor adhesion of subsequent finishes to the floor. To check that the surface is dry and free from residues prior to coating being undertaken, rub with a cotton or paper cloth. If the cloth picks up material / colour from the surface, then it is not dry or all excess stain has not been removed. If necessary, gently rebuff the floor using a new Bona stain cloth, moving quickly and lightly across the surface of the floor. Bona DriFast White Due to the high solids content of DriFast White it is extremely important that all excess stain is removed from the floor. This may take repeated wiping. It is very difficult to apply / remove DriFast White using a buffing machine and is not recommended, although a final buff of the floor as noted can be carried out. It is advised that the quantity of stain applied is carefully controlled as the timber will only take a specific quantity of stain this will not reduce the amount of colour achieved but will make the task of removal of excess stain easier. It is not possible to obtain a solid white appearance using DriFast White even if the water popping technique is used. For a higher intensity of white several applications of Bona White primer should be used in preference to DriFast White. N.B Bona White cannot be used to coat a floor stained using Bona DriFast White to increase the ‘level’ of whiteness, due to potential adhesion issues. |
