Nordic

Ultra-matt, near-white finishes, clean lines. The purest of the pale-floor family.
Harder-edged than Scandinavian. Where Scandinavian tolerates textile warmth and painted gloss accents, Nordic is all about discipline: near-white or chalk-white oak, ultra-matt finish, minimal furniture silhouettes, nothing ornamental. The floor is deliberately quiet so architectural moves (volume, light, joinery) carry the room. Pantone's 2026 Cloud Dancer is effectively the entire palette.
Chalk; bone; oat; dust; sole accent in charcoal or black.

Recommended species

  • European Oak
    Lime-washed or chalk-stained European oak under an ultra-matt coating is the canonical Nordic board.
  • Tasmanian Oak
    Cleaner substitute for European oak; takes the bleach-plus-chalk treatment predictably.
  • Messmate
    Pale-straw Australian option that reads as the right tone under a whitewash.

Recommended Bona finishes

  • Bona Traffic HD Raw
    The only choice for near-white oak. Water-white, UV-stable, does not amber the bleached surface. Ultra-matt sheen option.
  • Bona White (primer)
    Bona White primer is the system base - locks in the whitewashed tone before the raw-look topcoat.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • This is the single hardest style to hold colour on. Any amber-drying oil, or a non-UV-stable waterborne, will ruin the palette in under 12 months.
  • Do not use character-grade - Nordic reads as clean and select; the knots that suit Japandi or Wabi-Sabi are wrong here.
  • Yellow-toned Australian species (turpentine, spotted gum, jarrah) cannot be made Nordic - wrong base, the whitewash will read pinkish or greenish.
  • Satin or gloss reads as institutional. Ultra-matt only.
