Style archetype

Warm Contemporary

Medium oak, satin finish, transitional. The forgiving mainstream choice for 2026 builds.
The default high-quality Australian residential spec for 2026: mid-tone natural oak or blackbutt, wire-brushed but not character-heavy, satin waterborne finish, warm neutrals on walls, mixed metals. Reads contemporary but not aggressively minimal; holds its value in resale, ages gracefully, suits families and entertaining. Built directly on Dulux Elemental (caramel, coffee dust, blended cream).
Dulux Elemental palette - cream, oat, caramel, coffee-dust, with a soft pink or mauve accent from Dulux Ethereal for a contemporary note.

Recommended species

  • European Oak
Wire-brushed natural-oiled European oak is the category hero. Reliable supply, predictable finish, resale-safe.
  • Blackbutt
The Australian-native equivalent - pale straw to honey, takes any finish predictably.
  • Sydney Blue Gum
Pink-brown warmth for a slightly richer read; responds well to waterborne.
  • Tasmanian Oak
Pale creamy base option where the spec wants a lighter feel.

Recommended Bona finishes

  • Bona Traffic HD
The premium residential spec - commercial-grade 2K waterborne in satin, holds up in families/pets/entertaining.
  • Bona Mega Evo
Value-engineered 1K waterborne; where budget is the constraint but abrasion rating still matters.
  • Bona Craft Oil 2K
Where the client wants a more tactile, warmer oiled read over the same mid-tone species.

Sheen & stain

  • Sheen
    satin
  • Stain direction
    natural, light brown, honey, caramel

Pitfalls to avoid

  • This category's biggest risk is reading as bland - tension must come from joinery, stone, or a single accent wall in Dulux Ethereal or Evoke.
  • Avoid grey-washed European oak - that palette is the 2018-2022 look, not 2026.
  • Gloss reads as builder-spec. Matt reads as too-Japandi for this brief. Satin is correct.
