Timber Floor Finishes Selection Guide

Picking the right finish for the traffic level

Bona makes several topcoat finishes and they are not interchangeable. Each one is built for a different level of traffic and a different type of job. Using the wrong one means it either will not hold up or you are paying for performance you do not need.

All Bona finishes are water-based, contain low VOCs, and are made in Sweden. Available in over 90 countries worldwide.

Traffic HD -- the hardest wearing finish in the range

Two-component (mix a hardener in before use), giving it the hardest cure and best wear resistance in the lineup. This is what goes on floors that take a beating -- restaurants, retail, schools, busy hallways. Available in Satin, Matt and Extra Matt.

Traffic HD Anti Slip is the same product with anti-slip properties -- rated P4, exceeding the P3 requirement for stairs. Smooth to the touch, no grit in the film.

Traffic HD Raw gives an ultra matt finish that makes the floor look like uncoated timber -- a popular look right now. If you have dogs, kids and heavy furniture, Traffic HD is the residential pick for maximum durability.

Traffic GO -- 1K product with 2K performance

Single-component but engineered to perform close to a 2K product. No mixing required -- open and apply. Good for heavy-duty commercial work where you want strong performance without the pot-life pressure of a 2K system. Available in Satin and Matt.

Wave 2K -- between Traffic HD and Mega EVO

Two-component for better hardness than a 1K product, positioned for moderate commercial and heavy residential use rather than extreme traffic. Good for offices, apartments and busy family homes. Available in Satin and Matt.

Mega EVO and Mega -- residential workhorses

Mega EVO is the go-to for residential floors and light commercial spaces. Single-component, easy to apply, good durability. Available in Satin, Matt and Extra Matt. This is the finish most homeowners end up with -- it handles normal family life without being overkill.

Mega is the entry-level option for standard residential use. Available in Gloss, Satin and Matt. Fine for bedrooms and low-traffic rooms.

Primers to pair with topcoats

Every topcoat goes over a Bona primer. The primer affects the final look:

- Intense -- minimises tannin bleed on species like Blackbutt and Tallowwood, gives a warmer look

- Classic UX -- keeps timber as light and natural as possible, ideal with Traffic HD Raw

- Classic -- retains natural timber appearance, good for softwoods and parquetry

- White -- creates a Scandinavian whitewashed look on lighter species
