How to Maintain Hard Surface Floors

What counts as a hard surface floor

Bona has taken over 100 years of timber floor knowledge and developed a maintenance system for hard surface floors -- ceramic tiles, laminates, linoleum, vinyl and marble. The approach is similar to timber but uses Bona products designed specifically for these surfaces. Even tough surfaces are not immune to scratches, grit damage and dulling over time.

Prevention -- same rules as timber

Put a good quality mat both inside and outside every external door. Make them as large as possible to catch both grit and moisture. Take your shoes off where possible to reduce dirt tracked inside and impact damage from stilettos. In high-traffic areas like entrance halls and kitchens, consider additional mats to reduce surface wear and dulling. Any rugs should allow the floor to breathe.

No surface is immune to physical damage -- indentations and scratches happen on any substrate. Use felt protective feet on all furniture legs and bases. Lift and move things rather than dragging. Keep pet claws trimmed.

Wipe up all spillage immediately. Some spills can cause permanent staining on certain hard surfaces, particularly natural stone and unglazed tiles.

Regular cleaning with Bona Hard-Surface Floor Cleaner

Clean the floor regularly with dry methods -- the Bona Spray Mop with a Bona Microfiber Dusting Pad, a soft broom, or a vacuum with a soft brush attachment. Getting the surface grit off prevents scratching.

To remove water-soluble dirt, use Bona Hard-Surface Floor Cleaner. Dry clean first, then spray sparingly and clean with the Bona Microfiber Cleaning Pad. Rinse the pads regularly in clean water and replace when dirty -- rinse or swap after every 10-15 m2.

Bona Cleaning Pads can be washed at 60 degrees in a washing machine, up to 500 times. Do not use fabric conditioner -- it affects their performance.

Using too much Bona Hard-Surface Cleaner can leave product residue that shows as a hazy film. If this happens, clean the floor with plain water and gently rub the surface. This redissolves the cleaner deposits and returns the surface to normal.

Avoid household chemicals, cleaners and polishes. They can damage the surface.

Deep cleaning with Bona Oxy-Power formula

Over time regular cleaning will not remove everything. When there is a build-up of material that normal mopping cannot shift, use Bona Hard-Surface Floor Oxy-Power Deep Cleaner with the Bona Microfiber Deep Clean Pad.

Bona Deep Cleaner products use a hydrogen peroxide formula. The oxygenated formula creates micro cleaning bubbles that loosen dirt, deep clean the surface, and lift away residue. According to the CDC in the USA, hydrogen peroxide is a stable and effective disinfectant against a wide variety of microorganisms including bacteria and viruses when used on hard, non-porous surfaces.

Remove dust first, clean in the normal way, then spray an area with Bona Deep Cleaner, let it work for a minute, and wipe with the Deep Clean Pad.

Restoring the shine with Bona Hard-Surface Polish

If an area of the floor starts looking dull, consider Bona Hard-Surface Polish. It is a ready-to-use water-based maintenance coating suitable for laminate, vinyl, linoleum, unglazed tile (ceramic, quarry), stone and sealed marble. It brings a new shine while offering extended wear protection.

The product is only available in High Gloss sheen. It is not suitable for restoring satin or matt surfaces -- the sheen level will increase significantly if applied.

Clean the floor thoroughly and let it dry completely before applying. Any remaining dirt will be trapped under the polish and stay visible. Apply an even coat using the Bona Microfiber Applicator Pad on the Bona Spray Mop.

After 2 hours the floor can be walked on. Wait at least 12 hours before putting rugs and furniture back. Treat the whole floor rather than small patches.

Continue normal cleaning with Bona Hard-Surface Floor Cleaner. When the floor starts showing wear again, clean and apply a fresh layer of Polish. For polish build-up over time, use Bona Polish Remover to strip it back before reapplying.
